First place winners include sophomore Linda Johnson  in Solo Acting, the team of senior Robbie Walker and junior Gary Liddell  in Duet Improv, and the team of Liddell and sophomore Kadajha Catron in  Duet Acting. Third place winners include the team of Walker and senior  Jamal Clayborn in Duet Acting, sophomore Myesha Williams in Solo Acting,  junior Toshya Leonard in Original Oratory, junior Tiana Scott in  Poetry, and the team of Catron and sophomore Ta&#8217;lor St. Clair in Duo  Interpretation. </a>The 33rd annual Memphis in May International Festival kicks off the month with the Beale Street Music Festival on April 30.</p>
<p>Four stages will be filled with over 60 musical artists, including Mutemath, Colbie Caillat, Goo Goo Dolls, The B-52s, Boys Like Girls, and 3 Doors Down. Tickets purchased at the gate cost $37.</p>
<p>Also, Memphis will be honoring the country Tunisia May 3-9. Tunisia is located in Northern Africa, and many members of the country will present lectures of the lifestyle there.</p>
<p>Then, on May 13, the annual Championship BBQ Contest begins where over 200 teams will compete for over $110,000 in prizes and ultimate bragging rights. The event will take place in Tom Lee Park.</p>
<p>To end this spectacular festival, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra will be performing at the Autozone Sunset Symphony on May 29. Beginning at 6 p.m., families and friends will gather by the Mississippi River to enjoy great music and fellowship.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Seniors Davis Nguyen and Clay Hillyard are the most recent BHS students  to receive the Academic All-Star honor from The Commercial Appeal.</p>
<p>Carrying a 4.19 weighted GPA, Nguyen is enrolled in a number of AP and  honors courses. As president of his church youth group and a member of  Mu Alpha Theta, Nguyen is active in many school and community  activities. Nguyen plans to pursue a pre-med major at Vanderbilt  University.</p>
<p>Though actively involved in NHS, Beta Club, and Mu Alpha Theta, Hillyard  also volunteers for other activities such as Youth Villages, FCA, March  of Dimes Walk America, Special Olympics, and Student Advisory Council.  Hillyard plans to become a biomedical engineer.</p>
<p>Along with previous winners Xin Huang, Jessica Ferrell, and Stacy Wolff,  Nguyen and Hillyard were invited to attend a luncheon on April 30 at  the Hilton Hotel. At this luncheon, 11 overall winners will be announced  for a chance to win a $250 scholarship from the Commercial Appeal.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Forensics club members Toshya Leonard, Linda Johnson, AJ Byrd, and Josh Ferrell will perform in a state-wide competition in Maryville, TN on April 17-18.</p>
<p>Under the supervision of English teacher and club sponsor Virginia Hall, these students will compete in categories such as Solo Acting, Congress, and Storytelling.</p>
<p>In the Solo Acting category, Leonard will perform a speech about a woman who blames her life struggles on God. And Johnson will perform a speech about a woman whose son has been killed during war. The woman is offered an award on her son&#8217;s behalf; however, she rejects it.</p>
<p>Participating in the Congress category, Byrd will present a &#8220;bill&#8221; which states that teachers should not be held liable for issuing corporal punishment in a just and fair manner.</p>
<p>Ferrell will perform a humorous monologue by Bill Cosby entitled &#8220;A Trip to the Dentist,&#8221; in the Storytelling category.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>What started as Domenic Martini&#8217;s solo act, This Riot, a local teen indie band, is growing in popularity and fame. The local high school boys are performing on Beale St. at the New Daisy Theater on April 3 at 5 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door.</p>
<p>Three of the five band members attend Bartlett High: junior Domenic Martini, guitarist and vocalist; senior Casey Martin, guitarist and bassist; and sophomore Nick Hendren, synthesizer. Bolton High sophomore Jake Pritchard serves as guitarist, bassist, and backup vocalist, while  Munford High junior Adam McDuffie plays drums.</p>
<p>Recently the New Daisy has also hosted popular bands such as The Academy Is&#8230;, Mindless Self Indulgence, Keller Williams, Elvis Costello, and more.</p>
<p>The performance is part of a local talent showcase also including Songs of Winter, Stoned Ape Theory, Bell Isle, Double Love Band, Animal Sounds, Sailor Scott, Heldman Brothers, and more.</p>
