It is rare for a school to have an “all-around” student. This means that he or she is great academically, shows strong school spirit, and excels at a certain sport. There are many great student-athletes here at Bartlett High, and they are rewarded fort their hard work, as was Alyssa Montague.
On March 24, the senior signed her National Letter of Intent in Track with Bethel University. She has lettered in track for the fourth consecutive year, and qualified in Sectionals and State for the last three years. She holds the top two school record times in the 800 meters, and came very close last year in the state tournament to breaking the school record in the 1600 meters, a race in which she was running for the third time in her career.
Alyssa is not the only one of her family going to Bethel; she joins her older sister Arielle, who is currently on scholarship at the school. Arielle holds the Bartlett High records in the 100, 200, and 400 meters and last year qualified for the NAIA National Championship.
“I am really excited, and I feel like it’s a honor,” said Montague.
Girls’ Track Coach Steve Sullivan is happy but reflective, “I’m sad a little bit, because I was hoping she would stick around for a fifth year.”
Principal Malcolm Hawkins is also happy for Montague, “I am delighted that she signed with Bethel; she’s a great young person, and she will be a great addition to the program. She’s the most well-rounded person I’ve ever been around; she’s intelligent, she’s hardworking, she’s pleasant, she’s talented, and she’s fun to be with.”
