Fast track to fall with 80’s fashion

“History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce,” said 19th century philosopher Karl Marx.

Taking fashion back to the 80’s, when it was acceptable to wear mesh and layers upon layers of bangle bracelets, fashion designers have proven this quote to be true.

This time last year, if students were to arrive at school in overalls, shoulder pads, leather boots, jelly sandals, or neon and stonewashed jeans, they would have received a lot of laughs and unwanted attention from their peers.

However, nowadays, these types of styles do not get so much as a head turn if they are worn out in public. In fact, this ‘different’ way of dressing, which first became popular in the 80’s, is becoming a way of life for teens and adults all over the globe.

“I love the new 80’s look that designers are bringing back to the stores,” junior Amber Nelson said. “The clothes really allow people to express themselves better.”

And expressing themselves is just what these teens are doing.

Unlike most trends, the return of the 80’s has had a major impact on both sexes. Many guys are trading in their baggy pants and oversized shirts for a more preppy look that usually consists of a polo shirt and a sweater tied around the shoulders. Moreover, guys are turning to extremely tight jeans, vests without tuxes, and slouch socks in hopes of finding their inner creative self when it comes to clothing.

Girls, on the other hand, are adding off-the-shoulder tops and ripped jeans to their closets. Big hair, unusually bright colors, and oversized heels are also helping fashionable ladies to make statements without saying a word.

To some older people these new fashion trends scream déjà vu because they have seen them all before.

For our generation however, most teens are torn between the decision of traveling back in time with 80’s fashion or rebelling against this random change.

“This year while I was school shopping, I noticed that mostly all of the clothes looked way different than the clothes that were out last year,” senior Kirby Elliot said. “After I saw some jeans that resembled the infamous ‘M.C. Hammer’ pant, I left the mall and started the school year with fewer clothes than I intended.”

With any change, there are those who will embrace these new styles and those who wish that these ancient designs were left in the imaginary vaults that designers pulled them out of.
Whatever the case, it appears that 80’s fashion is here to stay and before long everyone will wake up and jump on the bandwagon for this new style.
