Tyler Perry comes back onto the scene with another hit movie, “I Can Do Bad All By Myself”. All of Perry’s movies and plays feature positive and inspiring messages and teach life lessons, but “I Can Do Bad All By Myself” is by far the best one yet. Here the message is to take care of your responsibilities, to know right from wrong, and to do the right thing.
The actors and actresses play their characters very well, especially Taraji P. Henson, who plays the lead role of April. April is an alcoholic singer who is forced to take in her niece and two nephews after her mother, who cared for them, comes up missing and is later found dead. Henson is an amazing actress and an excellent choice for this role. Sandino, played by Adam Rodriguez, is an immigrant renting April’s basement and he changes her life around dramatically by convincing her to keep the children and they soon fall in love.
Anyone would be able to lose themselves in this film; it is just that powerful. Adults and teenagers will particularly like it because they or someone they know will have had similar experiences to those the characters encounter. However, it does have some suggestive material that would not be good for younger children, such as rape, burglary, and addictions.
On the downside, Perry films feature the same concept–someone is going down the wrong path and with another character’s aid they get back on track. Perry needs to add more variety to his productions.
This is a more serious film, unlike Perry’s usual humorous style. Even though it did start off comically, eventually the drama increased and the intensity picked up. The film was very inspiring and more of a drama than a comedy. Perry incorporates comedy into a film that touches on sensitive topics, such as rape.
This movie is recommended to anyone that wants to get a good laugh or learn something valuable.
