“Imagine” a magical place. A “Stairway to Heaven” of some sort.  A place that will keep you “Stayin’ Alive.” A restaurant filled with food that gives you “Good Vibrations.” Not just “Yesterday” but everyday.

Near the intersection of Forest Hill Irene Road and Poplar Avenue lies a world of blissful ambiance and wonderful pizza.

Reflecting the eccentric 60′s and 70′s eras, Mellow Mushroom provides an eclectic dining experience that is rarely found in the Memphis area. The restaurant chain began in 1974 when three college students collaborated and made a small joint near Georgia Tech.

Their desire? To create a place where they can chow down on their favorite pizza while sharing their values and opinions (basically a coffee shop minus the coffee).

Now, with more than 100 restaurants across 15 states, Mellow Mushroom joins the Memphis pizza family.

Their menu exhibits an array of odd and exciting pizza combinations that please the appetites of carnivores and herbivores alike.

To start the meal, Mellow Mushroom offers a variety of appetizers, including hummus, hot wings, and the delicious spinach and artichoke dip served with toast points.

No matter if you are sitting inside or on the spacious patio (with a very cool and artistic crystal tree), the food is always piping hot.

Even for those who are crazy enough to not want pizza, Mellow Mushroom also has many different hoagie sandwiches such as turkey and cheese, avocado, the classic B.L.T., and a mushroom (what else were you expecting?) club.

Now it’s time for the most important part — the pizza.

Whether pizza-holics are selfish or willing to share is up to them, but the pizzas come in 10, 12, and 16 inch. However, the employees believe that bigger is always better.

Besides the bland pepperoni and cheese pizzas, Mellow Mushroom presents specialty pizzas such as the Mega Veggie, which features sun-dried tomatoes, spinach, green peppers, mushrooms (of course), onions, black olives, tomatoes, broccoli, feta, banana peppers, artichoke hearts, and even tofu. But cooks allow substitutions and deletions.

On the other hand, carnivores will delight in the Might Meaty (pictured above). This protein overload has 5 different kinds of meats, including pepperoni, Italian sausage, ground beef, ham, and bacon.

And what would this eclectic restaurant be without a pizza tribute to the Beatles? Mellow Mushroom’s “Magical Mystery Tour” pizza, named after the 1967 Beatles’ record, is piled high with pesto, button and portobello mushrooms, spinach, feta cheese, and jalapenos.

Although the dishes are phenomenal, the cost of a meal is sure to put a dent in anyone’s wallet.

Pizzas, depending on size, range from $8-$25, while salads and appetizers range from $4-$8.

But apart from cost, Mellow Mushroom provides a unique dining experience, and according to them, “happiness is a warm slice of pizza.”
