Cross country races into the season
“Nashville in November is a distinct possibility,” Coach Jim Steinbrecher said about the cross country season, adding with a smile, “I’m keeping the weekend open.”
Although the runners are not quite to the state times yet, sophomore Kaleb Mahoney showed great potential in the Jamboree at Shelby Farms with a time of 18 minutes, 25 seconds. David McGhee, senior, said that there were many schools at the Jamboree with large numbers of runners participating.
Cross country is “not just a 6-month sport, but needs to be a 12-month experience,” Steinbrecher said. In 2004, Bartlett had 5 guys finishing in under 19 minutes every race, making them 12th in the state. Right now, Mahoney is breaking 19 minutes and Steinbrecher hopes others will join him.
In the Twilight Race at Mike Rose Soccer Complex, September 3rd, Steinbrecher can compare the team with a wide spread of runners from a large area. “Twilight is a very fast race,” he said, looking at a website listing the multitudes of teams and runners. The guys will have a challenge running against teams twice and even quadruple their number.
